Auditable voting in Curacao a safe bet in 2009
Willemstad, November 26, 2008.- After evaluating the elections for the Insular Council in 2007 using Smartmatic's technology, the electoral authorities in Curacao decided that for the 2009 elections, official results will come from electronic voting and that paper votes will be used as back-up in case of audits.
Before the 2007 elections, Curacao had an electronic voting system; however, after an evaluation, there was a clear need to use a technology that allowed an easier auditing process and that created a voting receipt that could be verified by each elector after casting their votes.
In order to meet with these demands, during the Insular Council elections Smartmatic's SAES auditable System was used, which is a system that has, among other features, a voting receipt. For those elections the Supreme Electoral Council decided that official results would be those resulting from counting the voting receipts.
However, when comparing the results registered in the machines to those from the voting receipts, there was a 0.19% difference between them. Therefore, the Supreme Electoral Council decided that for the next elections held in Curacao, the official results would be those given by the system and that the receipts would be kept as back-up in case of auditing.
Smartmatic's auditable technology proved, once again, its ability to accurately register elector's will. SAES has been used in successful electoral process held in Latin America, Asia and the Caribbean.
