Smartmatic: 32 elections in 9 countries in 2022

Smartmatic deployed technologies and services to support officials managing various types of elections

United States – December 22, 2022 – In 2022, Smartmatic deployed technologies and services for 32 elections in nine countries to support officials managing various types of elections, from general, to municipal, referendums and primaries. Electoral bodies around the world are increasingly recognizing the need to modernize their election processes to conduct transparent and secure elections.

Los Angeles (United States)
LA voters continue to praise LA County’s BMDsfor simplicity, accessibility and accuracy. As a partner with the largest electoral jurisdiction in the United States, Smartmatic assisted authorities by providing logistical and support services for the June primary elections, the November midterm elections, Assembly District 49, and Assembly District 62 in 2022. To date, Smartmatic has supported authorities in more than half a dozen elections since the system debuted in 2020.

Kenya
In August, Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) deployed 46,000 Smartmatic devices to conduct key election processes during the general election. Thanks to the technology provided by Smartmatic, Kenya became the first country in Africa to publish more than 99% reports of tally reports in real-time on Election Day. By making timely information available to all stakeholders, authorities improved the auditability of election results and made this the most transparent election in Kenya’s history.

Philippines
In May 2022, Philippine authorities for the fifth consecutive time deployed more than 100,000 electronic vote counting machines for a nationwide election. More than 75% of the votes were transmitted within 3 hours of polling close, allowing information to flow quickly and continuously throughout election night.

Norway (Innlandet County)
Innlandet County in Norway held a referendum using an online voting system provided by Smartmatic-Cybernetica’s Center of Excellence for Internet Voting. The voting went smoothly and the official results were announced a few hours after the polls closed. Citizens were able to cast their ballots from anywhere and at any time during a two-week period.

Albania
Six Albanian municipalities used a Smartmatic solution to verify the identity of more than 600,000 voters. Nine hundred forty biometric devices were deployed in some 950 polling stations for local elections in March. In addition to verifying voter identity, the devices made it easier for election operators to manage polling stations and allowed authorities to monitor election logistics.

Bulgaria
This year there were three deployments involving around 11,000 voting machines. Voting machines were also deployed in Bulgarian embassies in 21 countries allowing, for the second time in the history of Bulgarian elections, votes cast abroad to be counted on the same day as those cast at home.

Canada (British Columbia, and Ontario)
In Canada, Smartmatic simultaneously deployed technologies and services to 18 municipalities during municipal elections in British Columbia and Ontario.

In October, 12 municipalities in British Columbia and five in Ontario introduced election technology to optimize vote counting for manual elections. More than 225,000 Canadians were registered to these elections. The technology ensured faster, more accurate results than manual processes would have produced.

The municipality of Ignace, British Columbia, implemented its first remote voting option for voters to choose five representatives from among 11 candidates. Turnout reached a record 67%, proving once again that people prefer the convenience of voting whenever and wherever they want.

Georgia
Smartmatic’s electronic vote counting and identity solutions were successfully tested in municipal elections in Batumi, the second largest city in Georgia and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, and in the municipal council elections for Senaki, a city located four hours from the capital.

Georgia belongs to a group of nations that have undertaken electoral modernization to improve the integrity of their elections with the goal of joining the European Union.

Honduras
The Electoral Commission of Honduras again deployed Smartmatic biometric devices to unequivocally verify the identity of voters who participated in the special electoral call on May 15. The devices also helped ensure that each polling place had the correct voter information.
