Provisional results in Argentina: Fast, Transparent and Trustworthy

Buenos Aires, Argentina - 20 August, 2019 - The provisional results for the Open, Simultaneous and Mandatory Primaries (PASO), conducted with the help of Smartmatic proved to be fast, transparent and trustworthy.

In a record for Argentina, primary results from 74.76% of polling stations were announced by 10:30 pm on election night. The results were made available to the public at By midnight, 88% of results were published online. For comparison, only 21.3% of results in the 2015 primaries were published by midnight.

The final official tally, which has already been published by the Election Justice for more than half of Argentine provinces, has confirmed the accuracy of the provisional results. The difference between the provisional and the final count is less than 0.5% in all provinces.

“The speed of election results is crucial in a time when we are accustomed to instant information. However, speed should not mean that election organizers sacrifice accuracy or transparency,” said Antonio Mugica, CEO of Smartmatic. "This election proves that with good technology and good procedures it is possible to have both benefits."

The solution provided by Smartmatic used several mechanisms to facilitate audits and protect the integrity of the vote. Political parties, authorities and voters were able to monitor the entire process, from the capture of telegram images, to the transmission and subsequent publication of results.

For these primaries, election authorities substantially modified the way preliminary results were collected and published. Traditionally, the tally reports were physically transported to centers where they were scanned, then electronically transmitted to consolidation centers. This time around, the digitization and transmission were done at the polling centers. Approximately 10,700 of the nearly 15,000 polling centers were equipped with Smartmatic technology for this purpose.

Smartmatic was selected by Correo Argentino as a technology provider for all the 2019 elections through two public tenders held in late 2018 and early 2019. Smartmatic will participate in the general elections scheduled for October and a tentative presidential runoff in November.
