Dr. S.Y. Quraishi

Dr. S.Y. Quraishi became the 17th chief election commissioner of India in 2010.  From 2006 to 2010, he served as a member of the Electoral Commission of India, administering the largest democratic elections in the world, and overseeing presidential, parliamentary, and state elections.

Prior to joining the Electoral Commission of India, he served for 35 years as a civil servant working in such diverse areas as sports, health, and energy.  He held many posts including Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Dr. Quraishi has received several prestigious awards in recognition of his contributions to civil society and human development. He has earned distinction for his study of languages.  He has written numerous articles and publications on elections, democracy, and social marketing.  

He serves on the board of directors of International IDEA in Stockholm. Dr. Quraishi earned a masters degree from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and received a Ph.D. for his thesis on the “Role of Communication and Social Marketing in the Development of Women and Children”.

His most recent book was published in 2014 and is entitled An Undocumented Wonder- the Making of the Great Indian Election.
