From 2004 to 2017*, Smartmatic worked with Venezuela’s National Elections Council providing technology and services for all national elections. In the fifteen national elections conducted with our technology in Venezuela, political parties of all stripes won and lost races.

We’re proud to say that some pioneering features of the voting system we deployed in this country, particularly the paper voting receipt, have influenced others around the world.

Nobel Prize-winner and ex US President, Jimmy Carter, whose Carter Center has observed over 100 elections in dozens of countries, has called it ‘the best voting system he’s ever known’.

* Following the National Constituency Assembly elections in 2017, Smartmatic publicly stated that Venezuela’s National Elections Council had announced results different from those collected by the voting system. In March 2018, and after 15 elections providing secure and auditable voting systems, Smartmatic voluntarily ceased all business in Venezuela.​

Notable achievements

2012 – First-ever nationwide election with biometric voting session activation. Automatically activating voting with people’s biometric information can deter voter impersonation and ensure the one voter/one vote principle.

2004 – First nationwide election using voting machines that generate a paper trail.

Scope

During the fifteen national elections conducted in Venezuela using our voting technology, we helped count over 377 million votes. These elections constitute the world’s largest using electronic voting machines that produce a voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT).

In addition to creating and deploying hardware and software, Smartmatic trained and deployed more than 384,792 operators to set up, deploy and retrieve approximately 545,530 electronic voting machines.
