Smartmatic to provide a solution for election data capture and transmission in Argentina
Buenos Aires, Argentina - January 10, 2019 - Following a public bidding process, the Argentine Postal Office selected Smartmatic as a technology provider for the upcoming 2019 elections: the Simultaneous and Mandatory Open Primaries (PASO) and the General Elections.
Smartmatic will provide a software solution that will allow authorized operators to scan tallying reports, so they are transmitted directly from approximately fifteen thousand polling centers. This revised process will make for a swifter and more efficient tallying and consolidation since the physical copies of the records (in this case, telegrams) will not be physically transported to post offices on election night, as it was done traditionally.
The Smartmatic solution will read a barcode on the report and automatically capture data such as page numbers, the number of pages, and an ID for each polling station, among other details. This process will minimize the amount of data manually inputted by operators.
A simple user interface with integrated instructions will guide poll operators. The solution is expected to streamline election administration as it will simplify the processing of temporary results.
Smartmatic has participated in previous Argentine elections. In 2017, the National Election Chamber of Argentina selected Smartmatic to validate the identity of voters in six northern provinces: Chaco, Corrientes, Jujuy, Formosa, Misiones and Salta, and also in 14 municipalities of the Greater Buenos Aires area.
Previously, in 2015, Smartmatic also provided a solution to help process preliminary results in the province of Cordoba. In addition, it deployed electronic voting machines for two cities: La Falda and Marcos Juarez.
This year, Argentina is getting ready for an election round in which citizens will choose a new president and vice president for the 2019-2023 term. 130 deputies, 24 senators, and 43 Mercosur parliament members will also be elected.
