Smartmatic Files Lawsuit Against Mike Lindell and My Pillow, Inc.

Boca Raton, FL  January 18, 2022 – Today Smartmatic filed defamation and unfair practices claims against Michael J. Lindell and his company, My Pillow, Inc. (“MyPillow”), for Lindell’s persistent, deliberate and damaging lies about Smartmatic regarding the 2020 Presidential election. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.

After the 2020 US Presidential election, Lindell embarked on a smear campaign against Smartmatic to garner publicity and, in turn, increase MyPillow profits. Lindell falsely claimed that Smartmatic manipulated votes in states and jurisdictions where Smartmatic technology was never used. Smartmatic’s role in the 2020 US Presidential election was limited to providing technology, support and services to Los Angeles County.

“Mr. Lindell embarked on a calculated, relentless and wide-ranging effort to defame Smartmatic,” said Smartmatic’s attorney J. Erik Connolly, Vice Chair of the Litigation Practice Group, at Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff, LLP.

Smartmatic’s claims of defamation and Minnesota Deceptive Trade Practices against Michael J. Lindell and MyPillow seek to restore Smartmatic’s reputation. Smartmatic seeks a declaration requiring Lindell to retract his false statements and implications completely. Smartmatic also intends to recover economic damages, punitive damages, and attorneys’ fees and costs.

“Mr. Lindell made demonstrably false claims and used various media outlets and forums to promote his disproven theories, including that Smartmatic’s voting machines were used to commit election fraud,” said Connolly. “Smartmatic cannot allow Mr. Lindell’s disinformation campaign to continue. It must come to an end.”
