Despite Pandemic, In-Person Voting Smooth in LA County with Smartmatic Election Technology
Los Angeles – November 21, 2020 – The ballot marking devices in Los Angeles County’s new Voting Solutions for All People (VSAP) system came through the California extended election period with flying colors. Under the specter of the coronavirus pandemic, LA still saw an estimated 852,000 voters turn out to cast their votes in-person. The county deployed almost 20,000 ballot marking devices (BMDs) to 791 vote centers across its 4,105 square miles (10,632 km2). LA is America’s largest election jurisdiction with more than 5.78 million registered voters. Smartmatic engineered and manufactured the BMD hardware, created the backend software to manage the devices, and provided systems integration services.
The touchscreen BMDs proved robust under heavy voter turnout, in open-air polling centers and extensive cleaning by poll workers after every voter. The simplicity of their design makes the devices easy to wipe down to minimize the risk of viral spread.
Smartmatic manufactured 31,100 BMDs in total, which provided the county with the flexibility to accommodate variations in voter turnout and ensure that back-up devices were always available.
“This is a significant advancement for Los Angeles County. We took the lessons learned from the primaries and refined a good voting system into an excellent one, from vote center locations to poll staffing to device deployment and backend IT services. It is a win for Los Angeles County voters,” said Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan.
Smartmatic provided more than 200 staff to support the project. In addition to the items mentioned above, Smartmatic also equipped vote centers and staffed and operated the Level 2 Help Desk, which fielded questions and tickets escalated from LA County’s Level 1 Help Desk and field technicians.
“Our partnership with LA County brought to life the election system that has been a dream for more than decade,” said Antonio Mugica, CEO of Smartmatic. “This innovative and secure technology will be introduced to the rest of the U.S. to help jurisdictions operate transparent, accessible elections with unassailable integrity.”
