Zambia: Country’s voter register goes over to biometrics

The UN chose Smartmatic to improve Zambia’s voter register. Its United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) teamed up with the country’s electoral commission to examine and select our technology on the strength of its flexibility and accuracy.

For the first stage of the project, we supplied the Republic of Zambia with 1,000 mobile biometric registration units. This included all hardware and software components in protective cases, training services, plus technical assistance.

This voter registration project in Zambia is part of the UNDP’s ongoing commitment to improving the performance of democratic governments. The UNDP invests 34% of its resources each year in projects in support of democratic governments and provides on-the-ground services in 166 countries.

Approximately 2.5 million Zambians were enrolled during the initial registration stage of the project.
