CONNECT winners visit Smartmatic's U.S. offices
Caracas, April 25, 2007 - The winners of the individual competition for the CONNECT Programming Marathon I, Ignacio Calderón and Raimundo Mirisola, enjoyed prizes that were well deserved: a trip to Smartmatic?s offices in the United States (Denver, Colorado) and an all-inclusive weekend stay at a renowned resort.
During the trip, the winners visited the company?s software development center in Denver, learned about Smartmatic?s latest products and technologies and discussed their experiences with Smartmatic employees who are also keen on programming. The prize package also included three days at the Keystone Colorado Hotel where they were able to cultivate their skiing abilities.
In this first Marathon, Smartmatic offered 40 pairs of participants the chance to demonstrate their problem-solving skills and to win fabulous prizes while simultaneously preparing themselves for other international competitions. The results were graded by an integrated panel of recognized academics from the University of Carabobo, Simón Bolivar University, Andres Bello Catholic University, the Central University of Venezuela, as well as by a specialist from Smartmatic.
The competition had two phases. The initial stage gave cash prizes to the top three pairs that were able to solve the most problems in the least amount of time. In the second stage, the top five teams split up as individuals to compete for additional prizes. The winners of this phase received trips and multimedia devices.
Under the name Topcoders, Eduardo Feo and Gustavo Fandiño emerged as leaders of the first stage with a prize of Bs. 4 million in cash. In second place, with a prize of Bs. 3 million were Raimundo Mirisola and Carlos Henríquez (Dead Pixels) followed by runners-up brothers Ignacio and Eduardo Calderón López who took home Bs. 2 million. In the individual competition Raimundo Mirisola and Ignacio Calderón won first and second places, respectively. Additionally, many participants had the opportunity to hold interviews with Smartmatic recruiters and some already have become part of the development unit of the company.
