Smartmatic technology debuts in Argentina
Caracas , May 14, 2006.- The first-time performance of the Smartmatic Automated Voting System in Argentina to elect the Municipal Delegate of Batán, showed the advantages of electronic vote, demonstrating a flawless operation in all stages of the system.
This non-binding public poll took place this Sunday, May 14th. From a total number of 4,112 voters registered voluntarily in Batán, a small town located 12 kilometers away from Mar del Plata, 2,657 voters were given the chance to try electronic voting by means of twelve SAES machines, installed in five voting centers: EGB Nº 7; Municipal Garden Nº 26; Municipal Garden Nº 4; Municipal Health Center of Chapadmalal Station, and Municipal Delegation of Batán.
The elections had the support of the Municipality, the Government of the Province (Electronic Vote Program, under the Ministry of Buenos Aires Government) and Smartmatic - through ''Transistemas'' company.
The voters elected the Municipal Delegate of Batán among 12 candidates. The voting procedure involved using an electronic ballot placed close to the voting machine. The voter had only to press an oval on the ballot corresponding to his/her preferred candidate, then confirming the selection in the voting machine touch-screen, checking the printed paper trail, and finally depositing it in a ballot box.
The Smartmatic Voting System was found easy to use by voters, and worked impeccably in all of its fully automated stages: vote count, tallying and announcing results. In addition, hardly 35 minutes after closing time, full official results became known.
Although the election was not mandatory nor binding, the Intendant, Daniel Katz, said that the winner, Ernesto Angel Lenzo, would be appointed as Municipal Delegate of Batán, having obtained 40,8% of the votes.
