Smartmatic showcases its electoral solution to European experts

Bregenz, August 8, 2006.? During August 2nd to 4 th, ?The 2nd International Workshop on Electronic Voting 2006? took place at Lochau/Bregenz, a location close to the border between Germany and Austria. In this event, experts presented their recent research work in the field of electronic voting.

Yulimar Quintero, an e-voting specialist from Smartmatic, explained the operation of the Smartmatic Automated Election System, SAES, and the range of services offered by the company to university academics from Spain, Italy, Germany, Norway and Austria. During the SAES presentation, attendants were able to try two models of actual voting machines, SAES3000 and SAES3300 , and so they voted, ascertaining the user friendliness of the equipment and of the voting system itself.

This workshop, a continuation of the one that took place in the same locality on 2004, is an international meeting point for recognized experts on voting and electronic government, working in academia, politics, government and industry. During three days of presentations, several open interdisciplinary discussions took place. It also served as an academic review on the recommendations on electronic voting of the Council of Europe issued in 2004.

The presentations analyzed advances in electronic voting in European countries, and their needs and requirements for future implementations. For example, Estonia and Switzerland have successfully implemented electronic voting through the Internet. During this event these countries presented the scope and results of the project. In Lithuania a law has been passed allowing voting through Internet starting on 2007. Latvia, Spain, Greece and Portugal have started to discuss the subject.

The event was held under the auspices of Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and was co-organized by the European Science Foundation (ESF), Towards Electronic Democracy (TED), the International Federation of Integrated Processing, and the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration.
