Smartmatic's electronic voting technology delivers accurate, secure, and reliable performance on election day

Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, April 21, 2007 - Smartmatic International Corporation today announced that more than 74,000 citizens in 106 precincts in Curacao successfully voted on its SAES3000 voting machines. The results of Friday?s election were upheld by the Election Council and accepted by all of the political parties and participants involved as accurate and representing the will of the voters.

"Smartmatic has always guaranteed the complete security and audibility of our SAES3000 and the success of this election yet again confirms our ability to provide the highest quality voting systems and most secure elections", said Antonio Mugica, Chief Executive Officer, Smartmatic.

Smartmatic?s SAES3000 stands apart from other voting systems because it is equipped with a Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT), a paper receipt that voters can see and verify. The redundant parallel paper trail permits rapid and thorough audits to verify electronic results ? ensuring the most secure and accurate elections.

"Because Smartmatic?s voting technology is secure, auditable and voter-verified, Curacao?s citizens were able to have the safest and reliable election possible, and we are pleased to report all participants have accepted the validity of the results," said Mrs. L. Richards-Dindial, Governor of Curacao.

Also contributing to the success of today?s election was the speed with which voters could use the SAES3000 ? taking an average time of 30 seconds to cast a vote. This greatly reduced the potential for long lines and congestion.

"The SAES provides a winning combination ? state-of-the-art electronic voting technology with the dependability and security of paper receipts," said Mr. Mugica.

Some examples of the success of Smartmatic?s electronic voting system during Election Day include:

  • 74,342 vote cast;
  • 98.75 percent of SAES3000 voting machines functioned perfectly;
  • 30 seconds average time to cast a vote.

The paper ballot receipts generated by each SAES3000 were used as the official record in tabulating the election results. An additional audit will take place comparing a random sample of the paper receipts to the electronic record in each machine.

Because of the multiple layers of security, the accuracy and the auditability of Smartmatic?s voting solution, the election results were accepted and approved by all political parties involved in the election campaign.
