Smartmatic presents SAES solution for electoral automation
Caracas, July 15, 2003.- Smartmatic, the device-networking solutions provider, launched the Smartmatic Automated Election Systems (SAES), an innovative alternative, 100% safe and 100% auditable, for the automation of electoral consultations.
SAES is a voting system with Direct Electronic Registration (DRE), including the functions of voting, counting, tabulation of votes, and adjudications. It also includes a paper record of votes, through printers incorporated in each voting terminal.
"The physical votes, collected in ballot boxes, are one of the seven modes of vote verification, and are a safe back up of the information stored and managed by electronic media", says Antonio Mugica, CEO of Smartmatic.
The solution, developed over Smartmatic's device-networking platform, is connected to the different devices through safe information protocols. It also uses the processing, safety, and memory capacity of the SAES3000 machines, and includes the electronic ballot.
The SAES3000 machines have LCD touch-sensitive screens, which facilitate the voting process, electronic connectivity for the encoded transmission of votes, and random memory storage, which ensures the audit ability of the system and the confidentiality of each vote.
The DRE voting systems have proven to be successful in different parts of the world. In 1996, 7.7% of electors in the United States had voted using some type of DRE system, as stated by the Federal Election Commission of the United States.
