Smartmatic engineering test 100% successful
Caracas, June 26, 2004.- Smartmatic Corporation, a Boca Raton-based provider of highly secure device networking technologies, today announced the Engineering Test of its electronic voting solution was a major success. The test, designed to check data transmission and tabulation functions of the system, was conducted on 400 machines in 335 different locations at both the regional and municipal level.
Specifically, the test was designed to verify that only authorized data could be transmitted, received and tabulated by the system. To do so 85% of the machines operated as normal, while data from 15% of the machines was purposefully tampered with. These machines sent unauthorized signals and data to the Tally Center.
"The Engineering Test of the electronic voting solution was 100% successful", said Smartmatic Chief Executive Officer Antonio Mugica. "The system recognized and accepted the authorized transmissions, while refusing to accept the unauthorized signals. No unauthorized data was incorporated into the tally."
Further, audit reports from the National Electoral Commission indicated there were no inconsistencies between the number of votes cast in the regions and those tabulated at the Tally Center.
"Now we can be sure that no one can transmit data into the system that hasn?t been properly authorized," said Tibisay Lucena, a member of the National Electoral Commission.
Additional tests on the Smartmatic voting machines included disconnecting the modem terminal during transmission of data and disconnecting the power source while the machine was printing the Vote Summary. In both cases, the SAES3000 responded as anticipated ? backup power systems worked and voting data remained safe and secure.
"The successful results of this test only confirmed what we already knew," added Antonio Mugica. "That our system and software is the electronic voting solution of the future ? efficient, reliable and most of all secure."
