Smartmatic Corporation wins Curacao contract
Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, March 30, 2007 - Smartmatic International Corporation today announced that it has entered into an agreement with the Island Territory of Curacao to provide its SAES voting solution to Curacao 's voters.
Under the terms of the agreement, Smartmatic will provide 174 SAES3000 voting machines to the Island Territory , and it will provide appropriate technical, operational and training support for the implementation of the new voting solution.
'The Government of Curacao sought a voting system that would ensure the fairest possible elections, and we honored and pleased Curacao has chosen our secure voting solution. As pioneers in voter-verification, Smartmatic systems provide a parallel paper trail'a printed paper record voters can see and verify 'the key to accuracy, security and transparency,' said Antonio Mugica, Chief Executive Officer, Smartmatic.
A voter-verified system, the SAES3000 solution will be in place and fully operation for the General Council Election on April 20, 2007. As with all past elections, the Island Territory of Curacao will be responsible for managing the election process, including control and oversight of all voting machines.
The SAES3000 voting machines are designed to support any type of electoral process, regardless of the scale (national, regional, or local) or the number of candidates or posts in contention. Each SAES3000 machine issues a voter verified paper trail (VVPT) printed on security-enhanced paper as soon as each vote is cast. This ballot 'receipt' shows the vote the machine has just recorded and allows the voter to verify that their vote was recorded correctly. It also serves as a physical backup of the electronic vote in case an audit is necessary.
The SAES guarantees 100% security and auditability of the voting process through several safety mechanisms including, but not limited to, the encrypted and random storage of votes, seven storage places for the votes, encrypted transmission to tabulation centers, strict validations done by the tabulation servers, the automatic blocking mechanism which ensures that no voter can vote twice, and the support tools used to carry out external audits.
