International observers praise Smartmatic automated voting system

Caracas, December 4, 2005. ?
International observers, representing election institutions from countries around the world, assured that the automated voting system used by Venezuela is the most advanced and secure on the planet.

In a press conference held before Venezuela?s Parliamentary Election Day, representatives of the international observers noted the transparency and legality of the election process, characteristics that could be proven in the numerous audits performed prior to the elections.

Eugenio Chichas, Magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice from El Salvador, considers that the Venezuelan election system ?is the most legitimate in all the Americas?, and having seen how the system works, he knows that the technical design of the system is exceptional. In addition, it is ?one of the most audited and certified elections of the continent?.

Guillermo Reyes, Magistrate of the National Election Council from Colombia, pointed out that the automated system acquired by the Election Power from Venezuela is extremely reliable and guarantees the secrecy of the vote at all times.

The international observers contend that the automated system is ?efficient and reliable?, because it does not allow the direct manipulation of the votes, and is a big step towards modernization. Finally, they reiterated that the election process of the parliamentary elections in Venezuela is ?legitimate? and has all the necessary conditions to perform a ?clean election?, inviting all the Venezuelan people to vote.

The meeting of the international election observers, held in a hotel in the capital, was attended by, among others, Luis Eduardo Botero, Magistrate of the National Election Council from Colombia, Aurelio Gracias Morales, President of the State Elections Commission from Puerto Rico, Wilfredo Penco, Minister of the Election Court from Uruguay, Emett Lang Salmerón, Vice President of the Supreme Election Council from Uruguay and Roberto Rivas Reyes, ex-President of the Supreme Election Council of Nicaragua.
