First batch of voting machines arrives to Venezuela
Caracas, April 14, 2004.- The first batch, comprised of 1,000 SAES3000 voting machines, reached Venezuela today. The aforementioned machines were manufactured by Olivetti Tecnost in accordance with Smartmatic specifications; and they were purchased in that country by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
This first batch is part of a group of 20.000 voting machines, which are expected to completely arrive to Venezuela during the next eight weeks. Immediately upon delivery, the voting machines will be able to be checked and configured in accordance with the type of elections or referenda process they will initially be assigned to.
The electronic voting pads, which complement the voting machines in certain electoral processes, are also starting to arrive to Venezuela. "Once configured, the machines will be available for potential public demonstration and for their definite use in the next popular consultation process, be that of whatever nature it shall be ", explains Antonio Mugica, CEO of Smartmatic.
The SAES3000 voting machines have been designed to guarantee a complete security and confidentiality of the suffrages, allowing the citizens to express their electoral decision in a fast and easy way, with a zero null-and-void index.
The SAES3000 voting machines are equipped with touch sensitive LCDs, designed to ease and accelerate the voting process; electronic connectivity, for the automated transmission of the votes to the tabulation centers; and non-sequential and encrypted storage of the votes, in order to ensure up to a 100% audit of the system and the confidentiality of every single vote.
In addition, each SAES3000 machine has an internal printer, which will record on paper each voter's decision, without revealing the voter's identity. "The physical votes collected at the ballot boxes are a safe support and a verification instance of the information recorded by the electronic media ", adds Mugica.
