Electronic voting pads for Venezuelan elections arrive
Caracas, April 21, 2004.- The first 100 electronic pads, out of the 45 thousand purchased by the National Electoral Council for the upcoming regional, municipal, and legislative elections, arrived in perfect state to Venezuela.
Produced in Taipei, according to Smartmatic's specifications, these voting pads are designed to render the suffrage easier and prevent the possibility of null-and-void votes. The voting pads are connected to the SAES3000 voting machines, through which the voters can confirm their electoral decision.
"In the event of referenda, the voters will be able to exercise their right to vote directly through SAES3000 voting machines, fitted with touch sensitive screens. The voting pads are foreseen to include more "options" for their use during the elections", explains Antonio Mugica, CEO of Smartmatic.
According to the executive's statement, the electronic voting pads are also touch sensitive. "The main objective behind the use of the voting pads is to guarantee the simultaneous visibility of all the voting options, so as not to give advantages to any given candidate or political party", he adds.
In order for the voters to get to know faster the use of the voting pads, a graphic design similar to the one of the ballot papers used in previous Venezuelan elections, was chosen. "However, in this case there will be no need to fill in oval holes, the voters will only need to press on the desired option", stated Mugica.
In addition, SAES foresees the confirmation of every voter's decision: "the option selected will appear enhanced on the screen; and the voter will be able to indicate whether said choice indeed reflects his/her voting intent by clicking on the word "Vote" that appears on the screen, and if it is not so, the voter will be able to correct his/her selection ", explains Mugica.
