99.5% of voting centers in Venezuela to be automated with SAES3300

Caracas, November 8, 2006 - The Venezuelan National Electoral Council entered into two contracts with Smartmatic. The first is for the acquisition of 5,540 SAES3300 voting machines which will be added to the 30,000 SAES machines used in the electoral processes of 2004 and 2005. The second is to guarantee the electoral services required before, during, and after the 2006 Presidential Election.

Electoral authorities decided upon the acquisition of the 5,540 touch screen model SAES3300 voting machines, part of the SAES family considered the safest and most auditable electoral solution on the planet, due to, firstly, the growth of the registry of voters in Venezuela and secondly, its goal of automating 100% of the voting process.

The SAES3300 allows the addition of a module that enables people with disabilities to cast their vote. With this, the 900,000 registered voters in Venezuela with physical disabilities will be able to vote with greater facility. Its sensible touch screen of improved quality and enhanced resolution with a 10.1" monitor has been designed to support multiple choice electoral processes. The sound card, remote control, and headsets are enabled in order that the visually impaired can vote with private audio.

Like the SAES3000, thanks to the superposing of more than 250 security mechanisms, votes cast using the SAES3300 are stored, transmitted using encryption technology, and protected. The electronic vote printer incorporated into the system allows the user to corroborate his/her selection in the machine with the one that is registered and processed.

With this agreement, Smartmatic is committed to the following:

  • To reprogram all the voting units owned by the electoral authority;
  • To ensure the transportation and protection of electoral material including all logistic and integration services;
  • To provide training for the 15,000 electoral personnel including machine technical operators and support technicians;
  • To coordinate the national and regional infrastructure for support and management control;
  • To develop and execute contingency plans for the voting automation systems and automation project management;
  • To carry out program setup;
  • To total and summarize all systems and transmit summaries.
