15,500 voting machines in Venezuela
Caracas, June 25, 2004.- 15,500 of the 20 thousand voting machines that will be used by the Venezuelan voters to exercise their right to vote during the upcoming presidential recall referendum and the subsequent elections, are already in the country, currently stored in a warehouse in Mariches.
Foreseeing a considerable increase of citizens registered in the Permanent Electoral Registry, due to the special individuals' legalization process promoted by the government, the National Electoral Council decided to increase the number of voting centers from 8,300 to 9,300. The purchase of one thousand additional machines was approved in order to equip the universe of 60% of the centers that shall function with the automated voting system. The aforementioned machines will arrive to the country in July.
The SBC Consortium expects to sign the service agreement for the presidential recall referendum next week.
