Venezuela’s 2009 constitutional amendment referendum

The 2009 referendum was held on 15 February, 2009, so citizens could vote to abolish term limits for the office of President, and other roles.

This is the eighth time the country had used a 100% auditable voting solution in an electoral process – and the third referendum process to feature touchscreen voting machines.

The technology platform was built in just three months after the previous electoral process. This was possible thanks to experience Smartmatic and the National Electoral Council (CNE) had of working together.

Not only did we carry out a reliable election in this short time, we also managed to keep every test and audit – a testament to the strength of the system.
