Venezuela's Presidential Election 2013

With the regrettable passing of President Hugo Chavez on March 5th, Venezuela faced the great challenge of organizing presidential elections in little more than 30 days. However, thanks to the technological platform developed in the country since 2004, the Venezuelan Electoral Power was able to offer all the necessary technical guarantees to execute transparent and safe elections on April 14th.

Despite the tight electoral schedule, some 15 audits of the voting platform were carried out, observed and certified by the country’s political parties.

In this short timeframe, Smartmatic activated and distributed the voting platform among 13,683 polling centers, able to receive 18,903,143 vote-registered citizens. In total, the election employed 39,282 voting machines.
